When looking for other Civil War projects, I stumbled across this video of a Civil War era dance. The Civil War Grand Ball is an organized Civil War era dance. They require era style clothing but you don’t need to know the dances before attending. There is a class to teach you the moves and etiquette of the time. Organized dances are held by many different groups and all will be unique experiences. Some dances are only for an evening while other last for several days.

I think it’s interesting how your post was a video. It sounded more blog-style instead of essay-like, but I like that. It made the project seem more personally interesting to you, and I feel you were better able to explain your thoughts and ideas. Good job.

I really like your idea of doing video diary style videos because we are able to see exactly what your thought and planning process was for this project. I watched a portion of the Civil War era dance video and was really intrigued as to where/how those who participate are able to get ahold of the traditional clothing (mostly the women). I think an event like that could be popular here in Iowa City, as there are many students and faculty who study this era, and even some who may not but are interested in attending one of Iowa City’s many cultural and/or historical events. -Apoorva Raikwar

I love the idea of the Civil War Grand Ball! The dancing looks so elegant. I definitely agree with Apoorva- I wish a ball like that could take place in Iowa City! I would love to attend, but I have no idea where I could get a fitting gown. Do you happen to know of any places? I wonder where the women at this ball were able to get such an elaborate gown.

I don’t know where they buy their dresses, but unfortunately there’s not many dress stores for Civil War era clothing. Most are costumes or handmade dresses. Some websites I found for handmade dresses were and . If you don’t want to spend a lot of money, most handmade dresses are very costly, then you can order a dress design from esty or ebay and made your own.
